Pakistan among latest countries to get Paris Club debt relief

The latest agreements bring to 12 the number of countries to receive debt relief under the deal with a total of $1.1 billion in debt deferred as a result, the Paris Club said, adding 30 countries had requested to benefit.

The debt relief will enable developing countries to focus their resources on combatting the novel coronavirus crisis that has crippled the world economy.

The Group of 20 leading economies and the Paris Club, an informal group of state creditors coordinated by the French finance ministry, agreed in April to freeze debt payments of the 77 poorest countries this year to free up cash to fight the coronavirus pandemic. Countries with debt service payments to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are eligible to benefit from the relief.

Federal Minister Asad Umar said that a proper monitoring system had to be evolved to verify due observance of the safety precautions at the makeshift cattle markets for Eidul Azha. The visitors and others associated with these markets have to wear face masks and observe necessary safety measures. He said the meetings of the NCoC were held in different provincial capitals to hold consultations and to appreciate performance of the provincial governments to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Umar said that although there is decline in the number of newly confirmed cases of coronavirus and deaths but people were required to remain careful in their conduct so as not to catch the contagious disease. He appreciated the services of doctors, para-medical staff, government machinery, and personnel of law-enforcement agencies in Sindh as frontline workers against the coronavirus. A new Batman spinoff about Gotham City is in the works

The Batman universe is expanding, with a TV series set in Gotham City's police department that will explore corruption, streaming platform HBO Max said on Friday. HBO Max said the original drama series would be produced by Matt Reeves, director of the upcoming Warner Bros. movie The Batman that stars Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader with no special superpowers. It said the series would “extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham.” The Batman is set when the DC comic book character is about 30 years old and at the beginning of his life as a vigilante, Reeves has said. In the first meeting of its kind held at CM House, which was hosted by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and chaired by federal Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar, the policy of all the provinces, future strategy to contain the virus and standard operating procedures during the Eid were discussed. The meeting was co-chaired by National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) National Coordinator Lt Gen Hamood-uz-Zaman and attended, among others, by Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho and Education Minister Saeed Ghani. The chief secretaries of three other provinces and Gilgit-Baltistan also attended the meeting through video link and shared the situation amid challenges of coronavirus pandemic and progress made in its curtailment in their respective provinces.
